MTV has surprised me once again. In only two short hours, MTV pulled off yet another award show that was entertaining, funny and chocked-full of surprises and censors.
Yes, there were parts of the show hosted by the hilariously quick-witted Aziz Ansari that were predictable. It is a sure thing that at any award show where fans vote for winners, Twilight will be the victor. While the Hangover may have more fans, those viewers are much less likely to take the time to log online to vote for their favorite movie.
As predicted the Twilight Saga and its band of vampires pretty much ran the show. Barely ten minutes went by without some quip or quibble about vampires or Taylor Lautner’s abs and the franchise swept all of its categories. Kristen Stuart (Best Actress), Robert Pattinson (Best Actor, Global Award), Anna Kedrick (Best Break Out Performance [for Up In the Air, but we all know it was for Twilight]), and the rest of the cast of New Moon (Best Movie) took the stage that night. Things never change… and oh, my, how they do.
I remember when I used to count down the days until the MTV Movie Awards. I used to eagerly anticipate the show that finally gave golden statutes, not to the boring, old people who created terribly dull “Best Pictures” like The English Patient, but to the deserving actors and actresses who starred in real movies, box office movies like Dumb & Dumber, movies that I actually watched.
I loved the MTV Awards because they didn’t offend me the way the Academy Awards did. It wasn’t filled with drawn out acceptance speeches or movies that I had never heard of. There was no pretentious academy dishing out Oscars to actors and actresses I’d didn’t know the names of, and no one was undermining my intelligence by having awards named with words I didn’t know the meanings of.
I looked forward to the MTV Awards, because while the Academy Awards often made me feel as though I were at a dinner party with my grandparents and I was under dressed, the MTV Awards made me feel like kid in my PJs (which I was).
